In the recent weeks, the Department of Child Safety reached out to Ohana because of an immediate closure of a long standing group home agency, Family Support Resources Inc. This abrupt closure would displace 112 foster kids in 16 homes throughout the Phoenix area. Ohana was asked if we could take over operations of the 16 homes, assume all staff, and help ensure the kids aren’t displaced. Many of these kids have been in the same home for almost 10 years with many of these homes being their source of love and safety.
After some quick prayer and consideration, Ohana committed to help stabilize these homes and transition all 112 kids to Ohana. Most of these kids are school age sibling groups (ages 3-15 year old) and parenting teens. To make things even more challenging….this large of an abrupt transition has never been done with the state in recent history and we had only 3 weeks to do this. However, through the support of DCS and the former agency we got it done.
Now the real work begins as we integrate them into the Ohana family and make sure every staff and child feels the Ohana love.
Our Ohana team is amazing. I am in awe of how everyone has come together to make this happen. The leadership team with FSR has been outstanding to work with. We are excited to have them on the team.
To be honest, this is the largest transition Ohana has ever faced. With these new homes, Ohana will now be providing residential services to over 250 foster youth and special needs adults in 40 homes across the valley. We will have over 500 employees by the end of the year. We never dreamed that we would have the opportunity to serve this many kids, but we are grateful.
Thank you to our donors, partners, staff, and prayer warriors. We need you now more than ever.
Thanks for standing with us.
